A mid-century modern terrace is a single story house of white painted brick and a glazed wall in slim bronze frames, with walnut beams projecting over the near half of the terrace and concrete pavers laid with strips of grass between them. The sofa is taupe and white with a teak arm and sits under the beams with its long line parallel to the glass, a matching armchair faces it, the coffee table between them is a square of natural teak, and the side table at the armchair's elbow is a stack of acacia rings. Cushions in mustard, a teak tray with a pitcher of iced tea and a bowl of oranges, and a bird of paradise in a white cylinder by the glass.

The architecture of this single-story home establishes a crisp mid-century profile, where white painted brick meets an expansive glass wall set in slim bronze frames. Walnut beams extend overhead across the near half of the terrace, continuing the structural rhythm of the interior ceiling out into the open air. Below these timber rafters, concrete pavers separated by vibrant ribbons of lawn create a rhythmic foundation that draws the eye outdoors. Under the walnut beams rests the primary living arrangement, anchored by a deep taupe outdoor sofa positioned parallel to the glass. A matching armchair faces inward, creating a balanced conversation circle that shares the shelter of the roofline and the open sky of the garden. Cradle & Hearth designed this terrace set to function as a complete outdoor living room, unifying structural geometry with material warmth and rich, saturated color.

Grounding the Seating Area

A functional patio requires clear spatial boundaries that define where lounging takes place. Here, an eight-foot round orange rug centers the conversation group, resting directly over the geometric grid of pavers and turf. The circular perimeter softens the right angles of the concrete floor, pulling the eye inward to the core of the seating circle and giving every piece of furniture a shared anchor.

On this woven orange foundation, the furniture forms a self-contained retreat:

  • The long taupe outdoor sofa lines up with the bronze window wall, providing generous deep seating beneath the shelter of the walnut beams.
  • The matching armchair angles toward the sofa, enclosing the space and facilitating face-to-face conversation across the rug.
  • The square outdoor coffee table sits equidistant between the seats, keeping drinks, books, and serving pieces within natural reach.
  • The round acacia side table rests beside the armchair, supplying a compact surface crafted from stacked rings of solid hardwood.

The aluminum frames of the sofa and armchair keep the silhouettes crisp and low against the masonry background. Generous seat depth encourages lingering, while the taupe fabric bridges the cool gray of the concrete pavers and the deep brown of the overhead beams. Smooth teak arms cap the metal frames, adding organic warmth everywhere the hands fall.

Balancing Wood and Metal

Outdoor spaces gain vitality when industrial finishes meet organic grains. The square coffee table introduces a natural aluminum frame that echoes the clean lines of the bronze window mullions, topped with slatted surfaces that allow rainwater to drain while supporting daily use. To the side, the compact accent table adds carved acacia wood, featuring stacked circular rings that contribute grounded sculptural weight beside the slender legs of the seating.

Along the wall, a thirty-inch rectangular black metal planter box introduces an architectural anchor point against the white brickwork. Its dark, powder-coated surface harmonizes with the bronze glazing frames and defines the outer edge of the paved terrace. By uniting solid acacia, warm teak arms, painted metal, and brushed aluminum, the setting gathers varied surfaces that capture daylight with quiet balance and endure open-air exposure.

Color, Light, and Living Green

Warm afternoon light brings out the deep hues throughout the terrace. The saturated orange of the round outdoor rug provides a glowing foundation, while mustard cushions set against the neutral taupe seating amplify the sunny palette. These golden tones pick up the amber highlights in the acacia side table and the projecting walnut beams overhead, creating a unified spectrum of amber, ochre, and warm earth.

Living elements complete the composition, tying the built terrace to the garden. Ribbons of turf between the concrete pavers introduce soft green lines directly underfoot. A lush bird of paradise stands in a smooth white cylindrical planter beside the bronze glass wall, introducing vertical height and broad tropical foliage against the pale brick. On the coffee table, a teak serving tray holds a glass pitcher of iced tea and a shallow bowl of fresh oranges, adding everyday comfort that invites residents and guests to sit, relax, and stay through the sunset.
